Valentine’s Day in Denmark
Valentine’s Day in Denmark is a charming mix of love and humour! Those seriously enamoured by Cupid send their valentines what is known as a ‘lover’s card’. Earlier, these cards used to be transparent and, if held against the light, clearly outlined the image of a lover presenting a gift to his beloved.
Danish men also send pressed white flowers called Snowdrops to their girlfriends on Valentine’s Day.
The other aspect of Valentine’s Day is that men often send a Valentine letter known as ‘gaekkebrev’ (or ‘joking letter’). It could be a love poem, a funny poem or a sweet love letter. However, it is not supposed to be signed by the sender and instead has just dots for each letter of his name. If the girl can correctly guess the identity of the sender, she is rewarded with an Easter Egg that same year!
Other than these traditions, the overall celebration of Valentine’s Day is pretty much the same as elsewhere. The day (and evening) is marked by Valentine Day parties, sending flowers to the one who has captured the heart or escaping to some idyllic romantic spot.
