Valentine’s Day in Brazil
While Valentine’s Day is celebrated in more or less identical manner in most parts of the world, Brazil, the largest country of South America, observes the day in a slightly different way, and on a different date! But the inherent spirit of love and romance dominates the occasion…
Brazilians do not celebrate 14th February as Valentine’s Day. In its place, they observe ‘Dia dos Namorados’, that is, Boyfriend’s/Girlfriend’s Day on 12th June instead. This day also pays homage to St. Anthony of Padua, the saint who is believed to bestow fortune and blessings on marriages.
Brazil dons a carnival look as stores overflow with flowers, cards, chocolates and sundry gift items. Gifts are exchanged between girlfriends and boyfriends, husbands and wives amidst a lot of love, laughter and general merriment.
Dance and music are an integral part of the average Brazilian’s life. The day is marked by cultural shows, concerts and musical extravaganzas which are attended in huge numbers by Brazilians.
Not just lovers and married couples, but almost everyone gets caught up in the celebration of ‘Dia dos Namorados’. Special meals are cooked at homes, parties and get-togethers are arranged in the evening for family and friends, while those struck by Cupid spend the day with that special person.
